Park City Ski Resort Rankings

By Todd Anderson
Oct 12, 2012

Annual Ski Resort area rankings put all three Park City Resorts in the Top Ten.

SKI Magazine is due on the newsstands or in your mailbox the 16th of October. The upcoming issue features the results of the annual readers’ poll. In the magazine they will rank the top 50 Resorts in North America.

Park City, Utah is home to three resorts that cover nearly 10,000 skiable acres located just a few miles apart. This year for the first time Deer Valley, Park City Mountain Resort and Canyons Resort are all ranked in the readers’ poll top 10.

Deer Valley Resort takes the 2nd place ranking; dropping from its unprecedented reign in the number one spot for five years in a row. Deer Valley still saw a number one rating in many individual categories and was likely impacted by the lack of natural snowfall last season.

Park City Mountain Resort moves up a notch this year to number four in the SKI Magazine Readers’ Poll top 50 Resorts. This is the best ranking that the resort has ever earned.

The tens of millions of dollars that have been spent at Canyons Resort in the past few years are paying dividends in the minds of SKI Magazine readers as Canyons receives the number ten spot in this year’s poll. This is an impressive move from rankings in the low 20’s just a few years ago. The number ten ranking for Canyons Resort is also the best that the resort has ever earned. Park City Resort Rankings - SKI Magazine Poll 2 4 10

Park City, Utah is unique in that there are not many cities that are home to multiple ski and snowboard resorts. Deer Valley, Park City Mountain and Canyons Resorts all share in some high ratings related to Park City’s snow, weather, accessibility to an International Airport as well as local restaurants and non-ski related activity options.

The YouInParkCity.com Group congratulates all three of Park City’s World Class Resorts on their rankings in SKI Magazine’s annual reader poll for the 2012/2013 season.

Developer Buys Promontory at Auction

By Todd Anderson
Apr 27, 2009

In the spring of 2008 creditors forced the Promontory luxury golf subdivision in Park City, UT into bankruptcy. The developer, Arizona based Pivotal defaulted on loans amounting to over $270M.

On April 15, 2009 a group named Pivotal 7000 headed by the CEO of Pivotal, Francis Najafi, purchased the development for a price far less than the debt on which Pivotal defaulted. The $70M bid by Najafi which was approved by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court effectively wiped out $275M in loans that had been packaged by Credit Suisse.

During the bankruptcy, Promontory maintained its operations which consist of two golf courses, clubhouses (golf, tennis, kids, outfitters, etc) an equestrian facility and more than 1000 building lots. The assets have been valued between $230M and $560M.

The new ownership plans to move forward with Promontory's original vision for the second home luxury community. While some property owners within Promontory may still have a bad taste for Pivotal, the fact that the development is no longer in bankruptcy and is being run by a company familiar with the project may be a benefit. Promontory's plan of reorganization binds Pivotal 7000, LLC, as the new owner, to observe key provisions of the court-approved plan and sale procedures.  These provisions include the obligation to honor Promontory's county-approved master plan, the Promontory Club's membership agreements and membership plan, and the assumption of all lot purchase agreements with Promontory lot and home owners.  In addition, provisions have been made in the plan for funding of legitimate unsecured creditor claims and the creation of a reserve fund for Promontory's homeowners' association, the Promontory Conservancy.

The stigma of bankruptcy and the relatively large number of speculative purchases and building that was done by private investors has hurt the market in Promontory. The luxury homes that are for sale in the Promontory area are currently some of the best values in Park City. Now may be a perfect time to invest or purchase a second home in a golf course community as the developer should be on much more stable ground for the near future.

On another positive note, Golf Digest just ranked the Jack Nicklaus and Pete Dye designed courses at Promontory as the number 2 and 3 courses in the state behind Glenwild (also in Park City).

More Reasons to Visit (and Live In) Park City

By Todd Anderson
Sep 26, 2008

Not to be out-surveyed by Ski Magazine (see the previous www.YouinParkCity.com/blog ), Skiing Magazine has come up with more reasons to visit and enjoy the Park City winter scene.  The current edition highlights a survey conducted to identify reasons, other than skiing, why Park City ranks as one of the best ski destinations in North America.           Need your skis tuned?  Jans Mountain Outfitters was ranked as the third best in the country.  They have stores in town and on the mountain at Deer Valley and Park City Mountain Resort.           Don't want a hassle with resort transportation.  Don't worry, it's free from anyplace in town and from all major resort locations within miles of the three ski resorts.  But for a special treat, try the Karaoke Cab (the Music Taxi is also a good ride).  It was ranked as the second best value in the survey.           Want to enjoy the après scene after putting in a big day on the slopes?  Park City was ranked as the fifth best overall in the country.  Best dining was the Seafood Buffet at Deer Valley's Snowpark Lodge. Butcher's Chop House downtown received special mention.  For upscale dining, Stein Erickson's at Deer Valley is the only five-star restaurant listed in the survey.  And, don't forget the music and dancing where Harry O's pulled in top honors.  On any night you might see Metallica, 50 Cent, LL Cool J, Nas, or any other nationally recognized personality. See the YouInParkCity.com Events calendar and Dining guide for more info.           If you weren't a part of this survey, come to Park City to discover the Best for yourself.  Chances are you will be coming back for many years to come.           Make your plans to ski Park City's three resorts - Deer Valley, Park City Mountain Resort and The Canyons - now.  We'll have the snow ready for you soon.  And don't forget the summertime activities (ask a local and they'll tell you they moved here for the winter and stay because of the summer).  We have some very special, un-crowded things to do until it snows.           Once you've experienced Park City, you'll want to make it a lifetime experience, and any of the agents with YouInParkCity.com can help make that happen.  Check out the website, then call or email for more information.
